PHP GD Library is not installed

I am having this trouble when attempting to use PhotoQ:

Warning: PHP GD library does not seem to be activated/installed on your server. GD is however required for this plugin to work properly.

What do I need to do to get this installed or activated? Is this something I can do myself or do I have to ask my hosting service to take care of it? They don't know what a GD Library is and are looking into it.

I have downloaded gd-2.0.35 but I don't know what if anything I can do with it.

Is the GD library used for generating thumbnails? If so, can I do this manually or is the GD library needed for other things too.

hi,

usually you can't do this yourself but you have to ask your webhost.
