having a small problem. maybe you can help. my ‘main’ image derivative is set to fixed width of 600px. This works fine when the image is wider than tall, but just now I posted a photo that is 600×900 and it scales it to be 600 tall rather than 600 wide. any ideas? thanks.

there it says
“Fixed Width”: you fix a maximal width. If your thumbnails orientation is “landscape”, it will have this width. If your thumbnails orientation is “portrait”, its height will be adjusted such that it matches the height of a photo with “landscape” orientation.
guess that is exactly what happens in your case. if you want all your photos to have the same width of exactly 600px you should use the maximum dimensions setting, set the width to 600px and the height to something very big, e.g. 9999px, making sure that it is always the 600px constraint for the width that is hit first.

doing what you said seems to have fixed the problem. things are now working as I expected. It seems strange though. As when something says "fixed width" I would expect it to behave by making every image that width.

probably true. may have to think about a better name. any suggestions are welcome...
"Fixed width" seemed so obvious and intuitive that I too spent hours working this out. "Smallest side" is a good label for that option, so why not make this one "longest side?" Maybe "fixed width" and "fixed height" can be added as new features, behaving in a more intuitive way?

unfortunately, "longest side" can also be misinterpreted because if it is portrait its longest side will not have the size specified either. i might go for "landscape width" or something like this.
for adding two more options for fixed width/height i am a bit reluctant because i don't want to bloat the whole thing and this effect can anyway be achieved via the max dimensions settings. what i will do instead is highlight this in the doc again (was there but somehow isn't there anymore...).
