I was just wondering, what were the reasons to choose to move the description of the photos to a custom field and inserting an IMG tag into the main post field instead of going the YAPB way : keep the description in the main post field and just save the image URL in a custom field (which is already done in photoq) and let the theme handle the formatting around the image ?

no problem at all. always happy to discuss stuff like this. and if you see that something should be done differently and you are able to convince me, i will also try to improve the code :-)
to your question:
first of all you can configure photoq to have whatever you want in whatever field you want it in. e.g., if you want the description in the main post field and nothing else, just switch the content view to freeform containing [descr].
so i guess the remaining question is why is the default option configured according to your description. well, not everyone knows how to tweak themes. having the image in the main field allows photoq to be used without adapting a theme at all. it works for example with the wordpress default theme.
hope that sheds some light on this.

so, maybe you could add a mini section to the photoq page to explain what to do if we just want something simple like a custom field for the image filename, and the rest in default place (description in main post field)
I didnt look into it yet, but seems that its not only a user-config option that needs to be changed in order to do that, but the admin interface of photoq which stores the description in a separate field and so on, or am I wrong ? (i didnt really use photoq yet, barely scratched the surface in order to decide if i'm staying with pixelpost, photoq or yapb).

nope, user only should be fine.
you are right that the permanent place to store the description is a custom field. however, what is put into the post main content is governed by the view. so if you choose to set the view to the post description only, the description is copied to the main content from the custom field, i.e. the custom field is mirrored to the main content (view).
why? because if you want to change the way your blog looks, you can just change the corresponding views (e.g. the content view). all your posts are then updated to reflect the changes.
